Marketing, Like Music, Is Better When Orchestrated

STRATEGY | Growth Design

Creating a universal language to connect, communicate and flourish.

Like evergreen classical music, good strategy should emerge from an out-of-the-box, visionary mindset and comprise a solid composition that stems from insights and foresight where it can serve as a guidepost for many years to come – through good and bad times alike. Its orchestration should include an analysis of the organization’s inner strengths and weaknesses as well as its flexibility to adapt, especially to changes in external factors. And it should encompass an analysis of the competition and other external threats and opportunities in order to gain invaluable insights toward gaining leverage for your business and value for your customers.

Growth strategy development typically involves being committed to a 3- to 5-year horizon and can be explored in one or more areas depending on your business goals, opportunities and market situation:

  • Grow in existing markets
  • Expand into new markets
  • Invented/Made-Here approach to innovation
  • Borrowed/Leveraged outside
  • Bought/Acquired in

Goals and objectives form the backbone of any good business strategy. Because goals and objectives go hand in hand, many professionals tend to use the terms interchangeably. However, there is a critical difference between the two. Goals are generally high-level statements indicating advancing in a general, long-term direction. For instance, a goal would be to “grow revenue”, “increase profitability“ or “make our (product x) a category leader.” Objectives are goals that become SMART. That is, the goal becomes specific, measurable, attainable relevant and time-bound. For instance, an objective would be to “make our (product x) the category leader in sales revenue by end of our next fiscal year.”

Why Being Strategic Matters

  • Generates a sense of direction.
  • Eliminates departmental silos and
  • Helps transform your organization into a unified, customer-centric growth team.
  • Increases operational efficiency.
  • Grows market share and profitability.
  • Improves resilience and sustainability – even to weather the storms.
  • Lends to being less reactive and more proactive – to stay innovative and ahead.
  • Focus on the projects having the greatest potential to impact revenue growth.
